The program provides chances for students who want to do research on the development of sustainable solutions to complex social-ecological system challenges that cannot be explored from a single, mono-disciplinary approach. Poverty, environmental degradation, urbanization, water, waste, energy, food, soil, conflict and violence, resilience, fairness, and justice are examples of contemporary local-global difficulties and crises that lend themselves to research in this area. Students who complete this PhD program will have a deep new grasp of the complex nature of global challenges, as well as the cross-disciplinary thinking abilities required to engage in multi-disciplinary teams bent on finding long-term, systemic solutions.
